Mali Frees Arrested Radio Host After Deadly Protest

Authorities in Mali have released a radio host whose arrest caused violent protests in the capital that killed at least one person and injured more than a dozen others.

Yelimadi Konate, a rapper and friend of the radio host, said Friday that Mohamed Youssouf Bathily had been released Thursday but that a judicial process would continue.

The popular radio host known as Ras Bath is often critical of the government and its policies. He was arrested Monday before hosting a show to discuss the army.

His supporters staged a violent protest Wednesday outside his hearing. Interior Minister Salif Traore said one person died and 17 were injured, including four policemen.

They were the first major protests in Bamako since a military coup in 2012.
