Police in Malawi say they have arrested a suspect in the shooting of the country's budget director.
Officials said Friday that they have detained former justice minister Ralph Kasambara at his home in the nation's capital, Lilongwe.
Kasambara is suspected of connection with the September 13 shooting of Paul Mphwiyo, who was reported to be about to reveal some damning evidence of government corruption. Mphwiyo survived but was seriously injured. He was taken to South Africa for treatment.
Malawi is one of the poorest nations on the African continent, relying on international donors for about 40 percent of the state budget. Kasambara's arrest comes a day after donors warned that they will withdraw their support unless the government cracks down on corruption.
