Authorities have canceled a tsunami warning that was issued after a major earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.7 struck Monday off the South Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea.
The quake hit at a depth of 65 kilometers, about 55 kilometers from the city of Kokopo on the island of New Britain, and nearly 800 kilometers from the capital, Port Moresby.
Although the quake sent people running into the streets in fear of building collapses, officials in Port Moresby said there had been no reports of damage or casualties.
There are also no immediate reports of major damage elsewhere.
