A strong earthquake has struck western Iran near the Iraqi border, injuring 250 people and causing widespread damage to buildings in the sparsely populated mountainous region.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 6.2 quake hit early Monday 36 kilometers southeast of Abdanan, at a depth of just 10 kilometers.

The USGS also said three smaller quakes between a magnitude 4.5 and 5.6 hit the same area a few hours later.

A relief official said there were no reported deaths from the earthquakes, but "a great deal of material damage."

Information in this report came from Reuters.
