update

President Donald Trump is delivering his first State of the Union address. His address is highlighting a strong economy and call for bipartisan action on immigration. The televised speech before a joint session of Congress comes a year after Trump took office and about a week after a three-day government shutdown spawned by a fight over the federal government budget and how to deal with hundreds of thousands of immigrants who years ago came to the country illegally as children.

According to White House officials, major portions of the speech will focus on Trump's proposed immigration overhaul, his opposition to free trade pacts, and a plan to improve U.S. infrastructure.

Foreign policy is not usually a big issue in State of the Union addresses. But expect China, North Korea, and possibly Afghanistan, to come up.

The State of the Union is typically a time to take note of the president's popularity. After a year, Trump's approval rating stands at 39 percent, according to an average of polls by FiveThirtyEight, an online site that focuses on opinion poll analysis, politics, economics and sports. The rating is lower than any other modern president at this stage of their first term.

The official Democratic response to Trump's speech will be given by Joe Kennedy, a Massachusetts congressman seen as a rising star within the party.

However, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has announced he is giving his own response via social media. Sanders has emerged as an independent-minded leader of the more liberal wing of Congress, and is said to be discussing a 2020 presidential run.
