VOA’s Portuguese service spoke to two elected U.S. representatives who said that the next American president has a big job ahead.
Democrat Evandro Carvalho, a Massachusetts state representative, is originally from the West African island nation of Cape Verde. He says the next president has to prioritize unity.
“First the next president will have to unify the country, to advance the country, there is too much work to do in order to unify the country," he said.
Democrat Tony Cabral, also a Massachusetts state representative, agreed.
“The next president, independently of who wins, will have many challenges domestically as well as externally,” Cabral told VOA. “…We have to create (an environment) whereas businessmen will invest in the country and create jobs in the country. The next president will have to address the dissatisfaction, the frustration mostly from the middle class, the working class, which in the last 10 years lost buying power, lost opportunities to advance socially and economically. Maybe it is not the same reality for all but the next president will have to solve this discontent.”
Trump wins Georgia (16 electoral votes).
Marijuana is a big winner this election day. Associated Press projects Proposition 64, the California Marijuana Legalization Initiative, will be approved. That makes California the largest state (12 percent of the U.S. population) to legalize recreational use of marijuana. This may put pressure on the federal government to reclassify marijuana in order to allow banks to do business with cannabis growers, according to Forbes Magazine.
Voters in Arizona, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada are also voting on legalizing marijuana for recreational use.
And Florida voters overwhelmingly (71-29 percent) voted yes on a state constitutional amendment approving the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Two years ago, a similar vote fell just short of approval.
Montana and North Dakota have similar medical marijuana proposals on the ballot.
