U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has outlined a far-reaching, long-term strategy to counter violent extremism.
Speaking to leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Friday, Kerry called for a "holistic" approach that includes accountable governance, and economic, political and educational empowerment for all.
The top U.S. diplomat highlighted efforts by the international coalition combating Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria. But he added that the fight is bigger just a military struggle against the Islamic State.
Kerry said that in the weeks to come, the world must work to strengthen security and stability in Yemen, North Africa, Somalia and Nigeria, announcing that he will go to Nigeria in the coming days.
He argued that ultimately the fight against violent extremism will not be decided on the battlefield, but in classrooms and religious centers, and by creating widely shared prosperity.
Kerry pointed to next month's summit in Washington hosted by President Obama as a forum to further build a multi-pronged strategy to counter terrorist threats.
