Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta says the Islamic terrorists who killed dozens of people in a Nairobi shopping mall have been "ashamed and defeated," but it is still not clear if their siege is completely over.
In an address to the nation Tuesday, Mr. Kenyatta declared three days of mourning for the victims. As for the terrorists, he called them "cowards" who will meet justice along with their accomplices and patrons.
The president said 61 shoppers and six soldiers were killed along with six gunmen, but dozens of bodies may still be inside. Eleven suspects are in custody.
More gunfire and explosions could be heard coming from inside the Westgate mall Tuesday. Officials say there are many hiding places inside the huge shopping center, and Kenyan forces are still going through the building looking for suspects.
The al-Qaida-linked Somali Islamic militant group al-Shabab claims responsibility for the attack. More than a dozen gunmen stormed the mall on the busy shopping day Saturday, going from store to store and gunning down shoppers. They tossed grenades inside a children's cooking class and also shot people in the parking lot. Their targets apparently were non-Muslims. The dead include nationals from Britain, Canada, China, France, Ghana, India and South Korea.
Al-Shabab is demanding that Kenyan troops leave Somalia -- a demand Kenya refuses.
Kenyan forces entered neighboring Somalia two years ago to help rout al-Shabab, which has been fighting to turn Somalia into a conservative Islamic state. Al-Shabab militants often cross the border to stage attacks in Kenya.
U.S. President Barack Obama told the U.N. General Assembly Tuesday that the Kenyan siege, and attacks in Pakistan and Iraq, show that al-Qaida may have splintered into regional networks, but is still a serious threat across the globe.
