Kenyan Officials Seize Huge Ivory Stash

Officials in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa say they have seized a large stash of ivory that was destined for Malaysia.

The French news agency AFP reports the stash, which originated in Uganda, contains 770 pieces of ivory that weighed more than 1,400 kilograms.

Port officials say the ivory was packed into bundles and disguised by smugglers using dried fish. Officials say the fish was meant to give off a strong smell in order to throw off sniffer dogs.

Kenya and other East African countries have tried to crack down on the illegal ivory trade, which has fueled an increase in elephant poaching across Africa.

But demand for ivory remains high in Asia, where it is used for ornaments and traditional medicine.
