Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has approved the construction of barriers along the border with Egypt, in an effort to keep out illegal migrants and militants.
Mr. Netanyahu said Sunday it is a strategic decision to protect Israel's Jewish and democratic character.
Thousands of African and other migrants have come to Israel through its porous border with Egypt in recent years.
These barriers will not seal the entire border with Egypt. They will be built at a cost of up to $400,000 in areas used by migrants.
Mr. Netanyahu said Israel will continue to accept asylum-seekers from Africa, but will not allow its borders to be used to flood the country with illegal workers.
