Israel has bombed several Syrian sites in the Golan Heights in retaliation for a cross-border attack Sunday that killed an Israeli teenager.

Israeli officials said the airstrikes Monday targeted a Syrian regional military headquarters and "launching positions." Direct hits were confirmed.

The strikes came in response to what an Israeli military spokesman called an intentional attack on Israel and the "most substantial" cross-border violence since the beginning of Syria's civil war in 2011.

There have been multiple instances of shelling from Syria into Israel, but Sunday's incident was the first time an Israeli has been killed. The teenager died and two others were wounded when the car they were traveling in was struck as they drove in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights.

It was not immediately clear whether Syrian troops or one of the many rebel groups battling the government carried out Sunday's attack.

Israel seized the Golan from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it in 1981 in a move that is not internationally recognized.
