The Islamic State group has claimed responsibilty for a suicide bombing at a Shi'ite mosque in Kuwait's capital that killed at least 25 people.

An IS-affiliated group known as Najd Province said it carried out the attack at Kuwait City's Imam Sadiq Mosque. The bomber detonated his explosives while the mosque was packed with worshippers attending Friday prayers.

The Najd Province group has said it carried out similar deadly attacks at two Shi'ite mosques in Saudi Arabia in recent weeks.

The Islamic State considers Shi'ite Muslims to be heretics.

Kuwait's emir, Shiekh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, visited the site following the attack.

Najd Province is a sparsely populated region of central Saudi Arabia.
