Iraqi officials say July was the deadliest month in Iraq in more than two years.
Government figures released by Iraqi's Health, Defense and Interior ministries late Saturday show 535 people were killed across the country in July, while nearly 1,043 people were wounded.
The July death toll in Iraq is the highest since May 2008, when 563 people were killed.
Iraq has been hit by a wave of violence since March parliamentary elections failed to yield a clear winner. Officials fear insurgents may be taking advantage of the political deadlock to try to derail security gains.
The latest figures come as the U.S. military prepares to conclude combat operations in Iraq.
Vice President Joe Biden reminded an American audience last week that 95,000 U.S. troops will return home and only 50,000 will remain in Iraq by the end of August to help with training its forces and protect U.S. facilities in the country.
