Two suicide bombings in Iraq's eastern Diyala province killed at least 40 people and wounded dozens more late Monday.
The deadlier of Monday's two attacks happened near the provincial capital, Baquba. A car bomb exploded in a marketplace killing at least 35 and injuring more than 70.
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement distributed on Twitter.
A second car bomb at a checkpoint east of the city reportedly killed at least seven and wounded about 25.
Baquba was the scene of fierce fighting last year between Islamic State fighters and pro-government militias. Government forces managed to take control of the city but clashes with the militants continue across Diyala province.
Last month, the militant group bombed a crowded marketplace in the province, killing 115 people who had gathered to mark the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
