An Iranian journalist has been freed on bail after being detained for two and a half months for reasons that have never been publicly explained.
Yeganeh Salehi, a correspondent for the Abu Dhabi-based newspaper The National, was taken into custody on July 22 along with her husband, Washington Post Tehran bureau chief Jason Rezaian.
Both publications said Monday that Rezaian's brother Ali informed them Salehi was freed last week while Rezaian remains in custody. The two journalists are said to be "physically healthy."
Rezaian is a dual citizen of the United States and Iran. Washington Post foreign editor Douglas Jehl appealed again for his release, saying it is "long past time for the Iranian authorities to release Jason" and allow the couple to leave the country.
