Iran Denies Underground Site is Nuclear Facility

Iran is denying an opposition group's claim that it is building a clandestine underground nuclear enrichment facility west of Tehran.

On Thursday, the People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran claimed that it had discovered evidence of the site 120 kilometers west of the capital. A group spokesman said the project was about 85 percent complete.

But Iranian nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi said Friday Tehran does not have such a facility. Salehi said if the opposition group had any details of a secret nuclear facility it should inform Iran "so that we can thank them."

A U.S. government official also disputed the claim, telling the Associated Press that the U.S. has known about the facility for years and that it does not appear to have a nuclear role.
