The International Red Cross says it will conduct a conference on North Korea later this month in the United Kingdom.

The event, starting June 25, will look at ways to improve cooperation with the North Korean Red Cross on poverty relief efforts inside the reclusive nation.

Red Cross representatives from Australia, China, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iran, Norway Sweden and the United Kingdom are expected to attend the two-day annual meeting.

The Red Cross has allocated $5.6 million to assist North Koreans in the areas of health, water, and disaster management.

One of the world's poorest countries, North Korea has suffered from several severe food shortages and natural disasters in the past 20 years.

This report was produced in collaboration with the VOA Korean service.
