Indonesian police say they have arrested three men with links to the Islamic State militant group, who were planning attacks in the country’s second largest city during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The men were detained Wednesday in Surabaya, on the country's main island of Java. Authorities seized bombs, firearms, and a suicide vest during the operation, according to police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar.
Amar says the men, who were influenced by Islamic State teachings, were planning attacks on public places and government offices in the coming weeks.
Indonesia has been on high alert since a militant attack in January left eight people dead, including four attackers in the capital, Jakarta.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for that attack which was the first IS-linked attack in Southeast Asia.
