Students, journalists and teachers demanding the release of an arrested student leader and denouncing violence by Hindu nationalists protested Tuesday at one of India's top universities.
Student leader Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested last week for allegedly shouting anti-India slogans at a rally called to protest a Kashmiri separatist's execution three years ago.
Violence broke out Monday when mobs of lawyers and Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party supporters attacked students and journalists outside the courthouse where Kumar, the student union leader at New Delhi's prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University, was taken into custody.
The BJP supporters demanded that the students and journalists leave India and go to archrival Pakistan.
Police said they were investigating allegations from both sides, and that no one reported any serious injuries.
Student protesters objected to Hindu nationalists' statements that the students were anti-India.
The uproar has again sparked allegations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government and the BJP are cracking down on political dissent in the name of patriotism.
Police cordons blocked right-wing Hindus from entering the JNU campus, where thousands of students have been protesting for days.
Police also arrested Delhi University lecturer S.A.R. Geelani before dawn. He and Kumar were both accused of sedition.
