The U.S. military said Houthi militants fired a ballistic missile late Sunday likely targeting a U.S. owned and operated tanker ship in the Gulf of Aden.
U.S. Central Command said in a statement the missile fell short of the M/V Torm Thor without causing any damage or injuries.
CENTCOM also said U.S. forces shot down two drones late Sunday over the southern Red Sea, while a third drone crashed due to an “in-flight failure.”
“These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S. Navy and merchant vessels,” CENTCOM said.
The actions came a day after U.S. and British forces carried out their latest strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, including hitting weapons storage facilities, air defense systems and drone systems.
The Houthis have been carrying out attacks since November targeting ships in the Red Sea in what they say is solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
