Hong Kong’s weather bureau has issued a tropical cyclone warning for the territory.

The warning said Severe Tropical Storm Chaba “will be closest to Hong Kong tonight and tomorrow morning, skirting about 300 kilometers to the southwest of the territory. Chaba is expected to further intensify and its associated gales will edge closer to the Pearl River Estuary later today. Local winds will strengthen further.”

Sustained winds have reached 71 kilometers per hour, with maximum gusts reaching 94 kilometers per hour, according to the report.

Hong Kong residents have been warned to avoid the shoreland and water sports.

The storm is also expected to bring heavy rain to China’s Hainan province.
