Joey "Jaws" Chestnut regained his championship title and set a new record by wolfing down 70 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes at the annual Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest at New York's Coney Island.
The win marked a return to form for the 32-year-old Californian, who saw his 8-year winning streak broken by challenger Matt "Megatoad" Stonie in 2015.
Stonie this year managed to eat a mere 53 frankfurters to place second.
The women's contest was won for the third time by Miki Sudo, 30, who chomped down 38 and a half hot dogs.
"This is a great year for me," Chestnut said. "I kind of refound myself, reinvented myself, and got myself together, and the hard work paid off."
Chestnut set the previous Nathan's record in 2013 by eating 69 hot dogs in 10 minutes.
Held by one of America's best-known hot dog purveyors, the competition supposedly dates back 100 years.
It is held annually on the July 4th holiday, and pushes America's love of Independence Day hot dogs to a stomach-churning extreme.
Most competitors slide franks into their gullets while drenching the buns in water to make them easier to swallow, then wriggle around to help the meaty mouthfuls descend into their stomachs.
Anyone who vomits is disqualified.
