Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier has been released from a Port-au-Prince hospital, where he was being treated for an undisclosed ailment.
Mr. Duvalier, who is known as "Baby Doc," was discharged Tuesday, nearly one week after he was admitted. A family friend is quoted as saying all sorts of tests were conducted and that Mr. Duvalier is fine.
The former dictator made a surprise return to Haiti in January, 25 years after he was forced into exile following a popular uprising. Since his return to Haiti, he has been charged with corruption, embezzlement and other abuses of power from his brutal, 15-year rule that ended in 1986. Authorities also have confiscated his passport.
Mr. Duvalier's release from the hospital comes as Haiti awaits the results of a March 20 presidential runoff election between popular entertainer Michel Martelly and former first lady Mirlande Manigat. The person who wins the vote will succeed outgoing President Rene Preval.
