Gunmen Kill 7 in Ambush on Police in Northern Kenya

Unidentified gunmen have ambushed police during a security operation in northern Kenya, killing at least seven officers.

Officials said Saturday that at least 12 officers were missing. One report said two civilians were also killed.

Little information about the attack in the Lake Turkana region was available. It wasn't known who was responsible.

Violence has flared up in northern Kenya in recent years between communities competing for the region's scarce natural resources.

Cattle thieves ambushed police in northern Kenya two years ago, killing at least 32 officers. It was one of the country's deadliest acts of violence against police.
