Gunmen in Pakistan have shot and killed a female polio worker and wounded another, in the latest attack on people trying to eradicate the disease from the country.

Officials say the women came under attack Tuesday in a village near the northwestern city of Peshawar.

The World Health Organization condemned the attack and said it would consult with local authorities on whether to continue the anti-polio campaign. No group has claimed responsibility for the killing.

The Taliban previously has condemned polio campaigns as a cover for spying.

Last year, World Health Organization officials suspended a polio vaccination campaign in Pakistan after a series of attacks on polio workers left at least eight people dead.

Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only three countries where polio remains endemic.

Meanwhile, officials say two people were killed and about a dozen injured in a blast in Peshawar.

Also, officials say gunmen shot dead a lawyer and his two children in Karachi. Authorities say the attackers opened fire on high court lawyer Kosar Saqlain as he was taking his children to school.
