Gunfire erupted Sunday in Sudan's North Darfur state during a protest against a failed investment scheme.
The joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur said gunfire was heard as hundreds of protesters were seen moving toward the center of the state capital, El Fashar.
Witnesses said police opened fire when protesters marched to the city center to demand their money back.
There is no official word on casualties.
U.N. officials told the Reuters news agency last week Sudanese investors have complained about losing large amounts of money in a "Ponzi scheme," a pyramid fraud where money is being paid illegallly from one investor to another.
