A court in Guinea has sentenced two people to life in prison for attempting to assassinate President Alpha Conde two years ago.

Six others were sentenced to prison terms of up to 15 years for their roles in the July 2011 attack.

President Conde survived the assault, but at least one of his guards was killed and at least two others were injured.

The attack came just seven months after Conde took office, following Guinea's first-ever democratic election.

The nation has been plagued by decades of misrule, coups and political violence.
