German police say they have arrested two men in Berlin on suspicion they were recruiting fighters for the Islamic State group in Syria.

Police say the men were detained Friday in a series of raids by more than 200 police officers on 11 properties in the German capital.

The group's leader, identified only as 41-year-old Ismet D in accordance with privacy laws, is suspected of organizing the group of largely Turkish and Russian nationals to fight against so-called "infidels" in Syria.

The other man, identified as 43-year-old Emin F, is suspected of being in charge of finances.

Police say there is no evidence the men were planning attacks inside Germany.
