Former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush are urging Americans to donate money to responsible aid groups helping with the rescue efforts in Haiti.
Speaking on U.S. Sunday talk shows, the two former presidents said the main challenge is to overcome devastated infrastructure to deliver food, water and medical aid to the hundreds of thousands of wounded and homeless Haitians.
They said because of the ongoing logistical difficulties, people should donate money instead of volunteering to go.
Meanwhile, the Red Cross is appealing for $100 million to fund its Haitian relief efforts. The group says the money will cover emergency relief and long-term recovery for 300,000 people over the next three years.
The Red Cross says its most immediate concern is to get lifesaving aid to survivors, but says it will soon concentrate on providing clean water.
A Red Cross spokesman, Matthew Cochrane, says the group is concerned about outbreaks of waterborne diseases that cause diarrhea.
