A federal judge in Michigan has sentenced former Olympics girls gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar to 60 years in prison for possessing thousands of images of child pornography.
Thursday's sentence means Nassar, who also is awaiting sentencing for sexually assaulting young girls, most likely will never walk free again.
Judge Janet Neff said Nassar had "demonstrated that he should never again have access to children."
Investigators discovered Nassar's child porn collection during their probe into the sex assault charges.
Nassar was the USA Gymnastics team doctor, as well as the doctor for the Michigan State University gymnastics team, and a MSU professor.
Nassar told Neff that he was addicted.
"You go back and you wonder how I got down this path to begin with. I really did try to be a good person. ... I hope one day to be forgiven, and I'm going to try to take every day of your sentence to try to better myself," he said.
But in a letter to the judge, Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast McKayla Maroney called Nassar a "monster."
"He abused my trust, he abused my body and he left scars on my psyche that may never go away," she wrote.
Nassar will be sentenced on the sex assault charges next month.
