The European Union is considering a proposal to offer visa-free travel up to 90 days in the 28-nation bloc to Ukrainians, rewarding the country for its judicial and security reforms.
EU Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said Wednesday in Brussels, the Ukrainian government has successfully achieved “far-reaching and difficult reforms” in justice and internal affairs.
The proposal to transfer Ukraine to the list of countries whose citizens can travel without a visa to the Schengen area follows Migration Commission confirmation last December that Ukraine successfully met all benchmarks under the EU Visa Liberalization Action Plan.
The proposal needs approval from the European Parliament and the majority of EU member states before visa requirements are lifted.
Avramopoulos also noted the progress Turkey has made in curbing migrant flows and pledged to propose visa-free travel for Turks next month if Turkey meets its obligations as underlined in the EU action plan.
