Ethiopia Begins Diverting Flow of Blue Nile For Dam Construction

Ethiopia has begun diverting the flow of the Blue Nile to make way for a giant dam, which is raising concerns in other countries.

The government held a ceremony Tuesday at the construction site of the Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam to mark the beginning of diverting the waters from the Blue Nile, one of the Nile River's main tributaries.

Both Egypt and Sudan have expressed concern that they will not have enough water to support their populations.

Ethiopian officials say the nearly $5-billion project will not affect the supply of water. They also say that the dam will provide electricity not only for Ethiopia, but also for neighboring countries.
