If you’ve ever wondered what it would look like to fly over the surface of Mars, the European Space Agency has released a stunning video showing the mountains, canyons and craters of the Red Planet in great detail.
The data and images used to make the video were gathered by the ESA’s Mars Express, which was launched in 2003 and has since orbited the planet 12,500 times.
The images in this movie were taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera and the video was released by the DLR German Aerospace Center as part of the ten years of Mars Express celebrations.
The Mars Express mission was slated to last one Martian year, which is roughly twice as long as an Earth year. It is expected to continue orbiting the planet through 2014.
