Astronomers have stumbled onto an object they call the “Accident”. The object is a brown dwarf, which was supposed to be a star but couldn’t generate enough hydrogen at its core to become a full-fledged star. They describe the ‘Accident’ as being about 50 light-years away, 10 billion to 13 billion years old, so it was formed early in our galaxy’s history. The astronomers suggest the discovery could indicate that there are many more of these ancient brown dwarfs nearby in our galaxy.
