The genetic mutation that causes Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) increases the risk of autoimmune disease, pneumonia and cognitive challenges. But it protects from some cancers and often leads to people valued for kindness and joy. Recently, researchers at the Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome discovered a major clue underlying all these things: The mutation creates a hyperactive immune system. Shelley Schlender explains how this knowledge may lead to healthier lives for those with Down syndrome.
