Europe says it will impose sanctions on Belarusian officials involved in vote-rigging and in the violent crackdown on opposition protests, following the disputed August 9th election. Incumbent Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko claimed victory with 80 per cent of the vote. The United States and the European Union say the vote was heavily rigged. As Henry Ridgwell reports, Europe’s options could be limited by fears of being drawn into further confrontation with Russia.
