An Egyptian prosecutor has ordered a medical team to assess the health of former President Hosni Mubarak to determine if he can be moved from a hospital in the Red Sea resort Sharm el-Sheikh to the Tora prison complex near Cairo.
The prosecutor on Thursday ordered the examination of Mubarak. The same day, the state-run news agency MENA quoted an official at the Sharm el-Sheikh facility as saying Mubarak's health condition was "unstable."
Earlier this month, prosecutors announced that Mubarak and his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, would be detained for 15 days as part of an investigation into corruption and abuse of power.
The former president's sons are already at Tora prison. However, Mubarak was hospitalized with heart problems before authorities finished questioning him.
Also Thursday, an Egyptian court ordered that Mubarak's name and the name of his wife, Suzanne, be removed from all public facilities and institutions.
In announcing the ruling, Judge Mohammed Hassan Omar said it has become clear that the "size of corruption" that is being uncovered in investigations of Mubarak "exceeds by far anyone's imagination."
On Tuesday, a state-appointed fact-finding mission released a report that held Mubarak responsible for the killings of protesters during this year's anti-government uprising.
The investigators said police used excessive force against pro-democracy demonstrators during the 18-day uprising that led to Mubarak's resignation in February.
