Egypt's military rulers say Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq has resigned.

The military announced the move in a brief statement Thursday, and said former transport minister Essam Sharaf will be the new prime minister.

Ousted president Hosni Mubarak named Shafiq to the post shortly after the outbreak of massive anti-government protests. Mubarak stepped down February 11, but several of his Cabinet ministers retained their posts.

Protesters have called for a replacement of the current government.
