An Egyptian court has convicted a doctor of manslaughter in the death of a 13-year-old girl following a botched female genital mutilation procedure.
Raslan Fadl was sentenced to two years, three months in prison on Monday after a judge overturned his original acquittal on an appeal.
The court also ordered the doctor to close his clinic for one year.
Soheir al-Batea died in 2013, the victim of a widespread practice performed on more than 90 percent of girls and women in Egypt.
Lawyer Reda el-Danbouki, who represented the deceased, called the verdict "a triumph for women."
Female genital mutilation continues to be performed in Egypt despite a government ban in 2008.
