Egyptian journalists are calling for the dismissal of the country's interior minister following a police raid and arrests of two journalists.
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered Wednesday near their union headquarters in downtown Cairo, where they chanted, "The Interior Ministry are thugs."
The journalists' union has demanded the release of all detained journalists, a presidential apology, and have threatened a strike if their demands are not met. Protesters are also calling for the removal of Interior Minister Magdy Abdel Ghaffar.
The demonstration is the most recent against the government of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, which has banned demonstrations and cracked down on dissent.
On Sunday, the Interior Ministry arrested journalists Mahmoud El Sakka and Amr Badr, who work for the opposition website Bawabet Yanayer, during a raid on press headquarters.
The two were detained over allegations they called for anti-government protests in response to Egypt's decision to transfer two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia last month.
