Egypt has carried out the first death sentence stemming from the violence that erupted after the 2013 overthrow of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, the Interior Ministry said. Mahmoud Hassan Ramadan was hanged Saturday morning.
Since Morsi's removal, thousands of the alleged supporters of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood have been jailed, while hundreds of the Brotherhood supporters have been sentenced to death in swift trials, sparking international outrage.
The United Nations said the speedy trials are "unprecedented in recent history."
Abdel Fattah el-Sissi is Egypt's current president. He was the intelligence chief under former President Hosni Mubarak, who himself was ousted before Mr Morsi became the country's leader.
