In Washington, D.C., the federal government is closed Monday for all but essential work. The capital area's Metrorail system opened all of its 86 rail stations Monday morning, after limiting service to underground stations for two days.
The storm crept up the eastern coast Saturday and Sunday, hitting states from the mid-Atlantic region to New England. The storm caused hundreds of delayed or canceled flights, widespread power outages and dangerous driving conditions.
The weather was blamed for at least five deaths.
The storm broke local records for a December snowfall, delivering as much snow in one storm as the Washington region normally sees in an average season. As much as 60 centimeters of snow fell in some areas.
