DRC: Senior Kabila Advisor Dies in Plane Crash

A plane crash in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has killed three people, including a close adviser to President Joseph Kabila.

Augustin Katumba Mwanke died when the private jet he was in apparently overshot the runway at Bukavu airport. The pilot and co-pilot also were killed.

Mwanke was considered an important member of the Kabila administration, and he enjoyed considerable power.

The crash also severely injured four people, including Finance Minister Matata Ponyo and South Kivu Governor Marcellin Cishambo. Congolese Information Minister Lambert Mende tells VOA (French to Africa service) that they will be evacuated to South Africa for treatment on Monday.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. Plane crashes are frequent in the DRC, which has one of the world's worst air safety records.
