The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the fiery attack on the trucks near Kabul.
Police could not immediately say if there were any casualties.
Taliban forces have regularly attacked NATO supply convoys in Afghanistan, but it is not clear whether the tankers were supplying fuel to NATO.
The Taliban has stepped up attacks recently as the NATO forces work to complete their withdrawal from the country by the end of this year. If the new Afghan president signs a security deal with Washington, about 10,000 U.S. service members are slated to remain in the country.
