Dozens Killed in Boko Haram Attack

At least 37 people are dead after Islamist radical group Boko Haram assaulted a town in northeastern Nigeria.

Gunmen attacked the Borno state town of Gubio late Sunday, setting off gunbattles with security forces that lasted through the night.

A reporter for VOA says more than 400 homes, government buildings and schools were burned down in the attack and that dozens of cars and motorcycles were set ablaze.

State governor Kashim Shettima visited Gubio on Tuesday and called on residents not to flee the area.

Boko Haram has launched many similar attacks during its six-year campaign for a strict Islamic state in northeastern Nigeria.

Chad, Cameroon and Niger joined the Nigerian government's fight against the group earlier this year after Boko Haram conducted cross-border attacks. The militants have since lost most of the territory they had captured for what group leader Abubakar Shekau described as a caliphate.
