Brazil was among the countries facing big difficulties in purchasing COVID vaccines early this year and, with fatalities soaring, its leaders bet on China's CoronaVac to jump-start its immunization program. But the Chinese vaccine is shunned by many Brazilians after studies indicated a low efficacy rate – so much so that Brazilian authorities banned the distribution of millions of doses this month pending further study.
