Protests across the Arab world: Jordan
Protests in Jordan, a constitutional monarchy with a relatively open political environment, were largely triggered by high food and fuel prices in the country. Subsequently, demonstrators added to their list of grievances failed economic policies, disproportionate wealth distribution and what they perceived as a lack of participatory rights in the country’s political process.
In an effort to quell the unrest at its onset in January and prevent its escalation into scenarios seen in other Arab countries, Jordanian King Abdullah II dissolved the kingdom’s government and directed a newly-appointed prime minister to take quick, concrete, and practical steps to launch a genuine political reform process, strengthen democracy, and provide Jordanians with the "dignified life they deserve."
