First lady Michelle Obama gave a forceful, impassioned defense of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, casting her as the only candidate who can be trusted as a role model for the nation's children. Obama was among the power lineup of speakers taking the stage in Philadelphia at the Democratic National Convention. The convention’s first day was embroiled in controversy over leaked emails that showed how party leaders sought to ease Clinton's path to the nomination by mocking her challenger, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

U.S. Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy III is introducing Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who was on the short list as a vice presidential candidate for Hillary Clinton.

Warren says, "What a night" and mentions speakers Michelle Obama and Cory Booker and adds "And Bernie Sanders is coming up" to big cheers in the arena.

VOA's Katherine Gypson on the convention floor says the Massachusetts delegation chanted "We want Liz."

"America is truly a country of opportunity," Warren says, telling her story of being the daughter of a janitor who became a teacher, a professor and United States senator.
