LIVE BLOG: Democrats Highlight Contrasts With Republicans as Convention Opens

update

First lady Michelle Obama gave a forceful, impassioned defense of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, casting her as the only candidate who can be trusted as a role model for the nation's children. Obama was among the power lineup of speakers taking the stage in Philadelphia at the Democratic National Convention. The convention’s first day was embroiled in controversy over leaked emails that showed how party leaders sought to ease Clinton's path to the nomination by mocking her challenger, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

Hillarty Clinton supporter Al Franken and Bernie Sanders supporter actress Sarah Silverman both are on stage.

Silverman is now introducing Sanders. She said Bernie "made us understand what is possible and what we deserve."

Seen in the arena, floor whips just started handing out "Stronger Together" signs to delegations.

Silverman gets huge cheer when she says, "Hillary is our presidential nominee and I will proudly vote for her. ... As I continue to be inspired and moved to action by the ideals set forth by Bernie."

Crowd, many waving "Stronger Together" signs, is cheering.
