First lady Michelle Obama gave a forceful, impassioned defense of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, casting her as the only candidate who can be trusted as a role model for the nation's children. Obama was among the power lineup of speakers taking the stage in Philadelphia at the Democratic National Convention. The convention’s first day was embroiled in controversy over leaked emails that showed how party leaders sought to ease Clinton's path to the nomination by mocking her challenger, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

Paul Booth, of Washington, D.C., was on the platform drafting committee. Calls platform visionary. Says the DNC platform needs a mandate from the American people, which will only come through working together. Another push for unity between Clinton and Sanders supporters.

Benjamin Todd Jealous, civil rights leader and Sanders supporter, urges unity again to beat Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Every speaker seems to be shouting to be heard over the crowd, which is loudly cheering and chanting.

Meanwhile outside the convention on the streets of Philadelphia, music is playing and souvenirs are being sold.
